Purpose

Trident House International, LLC developed the Recovering The Truth™ program to offer the public story time with individuals who’ve suffered health and determinant of health stigma, prejudice, and discrimination, to foster empathy and a path to equity in access and quality of care. Topics include addiction, mental health, and domestic violence

Background

Research has shown that:

  • 64% of public respondents believed that companies should be able to deny employment to people with a drug addiction
  • 67% of HR professionals believe that addiction is one of the most serious issues they face in their company
  • Drug and alcohol addiction results in $263B in lost productivity per year.

Program Description

The program provides topic-based experiences hosted in the workplace or other public venues, aimed at eliminating the stigma, prejudice and discrimination faced by individuals because of various health and determinant of health factors affecting them.

Participants will be given an opportunity to select a Truth Teller who conveys their real life story of stigma and redemption.

Program Details

Key program elements include:

  • Workshop Evaluation
  • Development of a Service Access Map – Infographic depicting how to access care
  • Truth Telling Sessions – Individuals in recovery tell their personal stories to participants
  • Debriefing Session – Participants led in facilitated discussion to collect additional insights and recommendations
  • Insights and Recommendations Report – A summary report/infographic of the insights and recommendations from Debriefing activities
  • Follow-up Evaluation

Outcomes

  • We’ve seen significant decreases in the percentage of attendees who initially strongly disagreed with being willing to accept someone who had been treated for substance use or mental health challenges as a close friend
  • We’ve seen significant increases in the percentage of attendees who strongly agreed that they would accept someone who had been treated for substance use or mental health challenge as a teacher of young children in public school

I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Springer in planning our member forum, which was entitled “Recovering the Truth.” Mr. Springer worked diligently with the AmeriHealth Caritas DC team to ensure a successful event. He had an effective workplan, which he implemented efficiently.
