August 30, 2017 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am EDT

Our Health Is Our Culture

  • Do you have questions or concerns about the health system in your Caribbean nation or across the Caribbean?
  • Do you work in health, housing, government, construction, transportation, criminal justice, business, agriculture, planning, education, tourism, climate change, policy, law enforcement, social services, energy or other sectors?
  • Does your health, the health of your community, the health of your employees, family or friends matter to you?
  • Do you feel like you have a responsibility or a desire to contribute to improving the health system in your country?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then this webinar series is for you.

Our Health is Our Culture is a series of webinars to engage anyone interested in health, in dialogue about the pressing issues affecting health and well-being in the Caribbean.

The series will highlight the opportunities and challenges we face in the Caribbean to create a Culture of Health; A Caribbean where everyone deserves to live in healthy communities where they can safely live, work, learn, play, and prosper.

“Restoring Paradise: The Cure to Violence”

This month’s webinar in the Our Health is Our Culture series, will present the latest violence data across the region, as well as present case studies of the Cure Violence prevention and intervention model.

The recent Inter-American Development Bank’s report “Restoring Paradise in the Caribbean”, noted that while crime data varied across countries, there was an overall high level of violent crime impacting the region. The report addresses several factors associated with violent crime:

  • Youth,
  • Violence against women and children,
  • Neighborhood characteristics,
  • Gangs, guns, and the police and
  • Criminal justice systems.

The report also highlighted that crime and violence in the Caribbean cost governments approximately 3% of GDP. This is significant, negatively impacting businesses, economic growth, tourism arrivals, emigration, and life satisfaction.

Presenting Organizations:

Our speakers will:

  1. Discuss the potential impact of violent crime on the social and economic well-being of countries
  2. Highlight examples of successful program interventions
  3. Provide key next steps and opportunities for action

In each Webinar we will present information on the intersectional nature of health:

The primary drivers of our health are environmental and social influences known as social determinants of health. These include: housing, access to transportation, climate, the neighborhood you live in, the food you have access to (or don’t have access to), crime & violence, gender norms, cultural norms/rules, whether you have access to childcare or can afford childcare, employment/income, whether there are parks, walkable streets and bikeable paths and lanes in your community/on your commute, and your education level. Individual behavior and choices and access to medical care are also factors that affect health significantly, but they are not the primary drivers of our community’s health outcomes. As such, Public health is more than medicine and access to medical care.

Improving health in the Caribbean will take a range of partners from health to planning, to environment & climate change, housing, criminal justice, business, and transportation (among others) all working together to address health.
